Cameras catch man with prosthetic hand stealing packages

ATLANTA — Neighbors in one northwest Atlanta community are looking out for a package thief with a unique characteristic.

Police told Channel 2's Matt Johnson the man has targeted several homes along Hascall Road. These crimes haven't been violent but they've been costly and concerning to neighbors there.

“I don’t even know how to describe how strange it is,” neighbor Daily Dewling said.

Surveillance video has caught the man, who only has one hand, taking package off of people’s front porches.

Neighbors said they are installing cameras and vowing to have packages sent elsewhere.

“We noticed it was a man with a hook for a left hand,” Dewling told Johnson.

Dewling said she was the latest victim in the neighborhood. Her home surveillance camera caught the man in the act last Sunday.

“It's always uncomfortable when you know that someone is that close to your home, he was right here by our front door,” Dewling said.

She told Johnson she was already on the lookout for the man because he had struck before in her Loring Heights neighborhood.

Another neighbor told police a man with a prosthetic hand stole her security camera just three days earlier.

Dewling is still grappling with the fact the suspect came back to meddle with people's property.

“We've had multiple police reports filed, he's so distinctive looking,” Dewling told Johnson.

Other neighbors said they are installing cameras and vowing to have packages sent elsewhere until the man's caught.

“If I know that I’m getting something valuable delivered to the house I’m going to have it delivered to the office from now on,” Dewling said.

Police have not announced any arrests in this case. Neighbors said they are hoping by sharing the man’s picture it will keep him away from the area.
