Atlanta officials warn of potentially contaminated water in parks

ATLANTA — City of Atlanta officials are warning of potentially contaminated water in some parks and Peachtree Creek.

Warning signs and caution tape went up Friday around the Ansley Park neighborhood because of a nearby raw sewage spill.

City officials said an undetermined amount of raw sewage spilled, affecting at least Winn Park, Eubanks Park and the Dell Park.

A sewage spill led city officials to issue a warning about possible contaminated water in some parks.

"We've been kind of conscious about staying on higher ground, which is sort of an odd thing to have to do, and we definitely don't go down into that area," neighbor Janie Mardis said.

City crews and the Chattahoochee Riverkeeper are watching E. coli levels as they figure out what happened.

"It seems that right here close to Midtown, this is something they definitely want to take care of," neighbor Brian Marczak said.

The extent of the spill has yet to be determined, but city officials said Peachtree Creek has been affected, which runs through parts of Atlanta and into the Chattahoochee River.

Channel 2's Matt Johnson learned from neighbors that there was another spill two years ago near the same park.

"Something like this happens, it makes you wonder if there's other problems going on underground," Mardis said.
