Hartsfield-Jackson ready for busiest travel weekend of year

ATLANTA — The world’s busiest airport is ready for the busiest travel weekend of the year.

Nearly 3 million people are expected to pass through Atlanta's Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport.

Officials expect things to run more smoothly than in previous years, with a lot more staff and security in place then last year during the holidays and during the start of the summer travel season.

Large crowds are expected Wednesday, with people flying the day before Thanksgiving. The busiest day for fliers will be Sunday.

Hartsfield-Jackson’s interim general manager, Roosevelt Council Jr., said there are many changes since he took over last spring.

The airport has added more workers and the TSA also added more agents to reduce the wait times at security.

“They did so by opening all of the lanes early, instead of 6:30, at 5:30 a.m. They also manned every single checkpoint,” Council said

Council said in order to keep things running smoothly, it's imperative to know what's in your carry on. So far this year, the airport's TSA director says they've found and confiscated 217 weapons.

Wednesday morning, things ran smoothly at the airport as passengers began filing through.

"I was expecting a lot of lines and a lot of confusion, but everything's really smooth this morning," passenger Stacey Fractious said.

Officials still recommend that travelers get to the airport at least two hours early.

If you’re coming to pick up family members, give yourself more time to deal with traffic around the airport.
