APD officer, woman turn themselves in for deadly racing crash

Shawn Jones Jr. and Jade Dibaje

ATLANTA — Channel 2 Action News has learned an Atlanta police officer and a second suspect have turned themselves in to authorities for a deadly 2016 street car racing crash.

Officer Shawn Jones and Jade Dibaje turned themselves in on Thursday. Both are charged with vehicular homicide and racing in the September crash that killed Jones’s passenger Ramish Attai.

The pair were coming from a Midtown club, according to authorities. Initially, Dibaje said she was simply following Jones and witnessed the crash along with her passenger.

The Georgia State Patrol filed electronically-filed arrest warrants in the case in February, but until last week, those warrants had not been served.

In mid-April, Channel 2's Nicole Carr reached out to several agencies for an explanation on the delay.

On Thursday, the Fulton County’s District Attorney’s Office released a statement that read, in part:

"A warrant for the arrest of both drivers was presented to a Fulton County Magistrate on February 21, 2017. The Fulton County District Attorney's office arranged bond amounts for both warrants at $25,000.00 each/ The defendants surrendered and themselves to the Fulton County Jail for booking on April 27, 2017. The bonds amounts were based upon the severe injuries received by Jones and the high-risk pregnancy of Dibaje."

The D.A.'s office anticipates the case will head to a Grand Jury in the next 30 days.

Jones is the son and namesake of APD's recently-retired assistant chief. He remains employed by APD, where he's been a law enforcement officer since 2011.

In an April statement to Carr, APD stated they were unaware of charges filed against Jones, and were conducting an internal investigation to determine whether they will take any action against Jones.
