9-year-old boy pleads for officers to stay safe

ATLANTA — After a 9-year-old boy saw

, he wanted to be sure to tell police officers to stay safe.

William Smiley, 9, asked his mother to call Officer Kim Jones with the Atlanta Police Department to make sure she was okay.

Jones responded by thanking William for thinking of her.

She went on to say that she was grateful that he felt compelled to reach out to her.

"I love you and never forget that," Jones said. "He has the perfect last name and the prettiest smile."

William is the son of Officer Shawn Smiley, who was killed in 2012 in a helicopter crash as he and his partner searched for a missing child.
