ATLANTA — Two people are hurt after a group of men stormed their house, took their car and beat them up with guns.
Officers and detectives were at a home on Guilford Forest Drive investigating a home invasion early Wednesday morning. It happened in the same subdivision where Atlanta Mayor Kasim Reed lives.
Officers at the Zone 4 precinct in southwest Atlanta are looking for the victim's stolen car.
Police said three people were upstairs when three men with their faces covered confronted them.
The home invaders beat two of the residents with a gun, according to police.
The victims told officers the thieves took their credit cards and check book and got away by stealing their 2012 red Buick Enclave, leaving tire tracks in the front yard.
Neighbors told Channel 2's Sophia Choi that they are concerned about what they say is a recent spike in crime in their neighborhood.
"We are terrorized by thugs, from break-ins to attempted car jackings. Just not feeling comfortable or safe on a house we pay taxes on," one resident said.
Choi checked the Atlanta police online criminal portal and found four incidents in the last year within a mile of the house.
Neighbors said that number is inaccurate, and burglars hit several homes recently and a carjacking attempt happened a week ago.
“In the last month, two incidents have happened, and it should be alleviated as soon as possible,” resident Phil Johnson said.
Neighbors said they pay $750 in Homeowner’s Association fees each year, and they want to see that money used for safety precautions.
“We need a gate. We need speed bumps,” one resident said. “It should be gated, and I don’t know what the problem is.”
One neighbor is so upset about the crime she plans to sleep in the mayor’s front yard. She said an officer is always there guarding the home.
