16-year-old arrested in connection to popular yoga instructor, Army vet's death

ATLANTA — Police announced Friday they have arrested a man they say killed a military veteran.

Investigators say Randy Smith was checking on his rental property on Joseph E. Lowery Boulevard when someone shot him and stole his truck in southwest Atlanta Sunday.

"You come home and you get murdered on United States soil," Smith's sister Lasonya Smith Zachery told Channel 2's Carl Willis. "It's hurtful."

Friday Atlanta police announced that they have one person in custody, a 16-year-old they believe to be the shooter.

"He came in and turned himself in in the presence of his attorney. So, needless to say he hasn't really talked to us," Maj. Adam Lee III with the Atlanta Police Department said.

Leaving the motive a mystery for now.

Relatives tell Willis that Smith had been working on one of his rental properties when he was shot.

"My brother, he loved that community. He bought that house because it was a historical neighborhood and he wanted to be a part of that community," Zachary said.

"I've lived here 64 years in Atlanta, Georgia, one of the best places in the world to live, and this hurts," said Bernard Heard.

Smith is also being remembered as a beloved yoga instructor in Decatur.

Police say their investigation continues.

"There's other people that we need to talk to, other witnesses," Lee told Willis.

"I don't really think this is the end of it," Zachary said.

Smith was a 30-year Army veteran. He leaves behind a wife, three sons and four grandchildren.
