Atlanta police say a gunman shot the officer, identified in court documents at Justin Fong-Border, in the abdomen when the officer showed up at the Allure at Brookwood apartments on Peachtree Valley Road to check out a home invastion about 3:30 p.m. Saturday.

According to court documents, the officer shot was Justin Fong-Borden.

Police told us Bell and Thomas kicked in a door at an apartment Saturday afternoon.

The resident called police to say someone was attempting to break in. Fong-Borden saw the door had been kicked in when he arrived and he was shot while still in the hallway, police said.

He fired back and shot Thomas at least twice.

Police say Fong-Borden was wearing a bulletproof vest, which they credit with saving his life.

Atlanta police say Fong-Borden is a 30-year-old Atlanta native who joined the department in November 2012.

According to Atlanta police, he was assigned to the Field Operations Division as a patrolman at the Zone 2 precinct in Buckhead.

Thomas did not appear in court because he is still in the hospital recovering.

Fong-Borden is at home resting.
