MCDONOUGH, Ga. — McDonough police are asking the public’s assistance in tracking down a man accused of killing the brother of a city councilwoman.
The victim, 26-year-old Prince Varner, was shot several times inside the Red Zone Sports Bar and Grill on Racetrack Road early Saturday.
He died shortly afterward at a hospital emergency room.
The victim’s sister, Kamari Varner, is running for re-election to the McDonough City Council. She told Channel 2’s Tom Regan the violent death of her brother is devastating to her and her family.
“It just hurts so bad to know he’s not going to pick up the phone and call me,” said Varner.
McDonough police say the victim and the shooter got into a dispute inside the bar. Both men left. One went to get a gun and followed the victim back into the bar. The shooting was caught on a bar surveillance camera.
“All of a sudden, you see the victim open up the door to go back into the club. He stops and turns around, and when he turns around the suspect comes running in and shoots him several times,” said McDonough police Detective T.F. Spangenberg. Police have posted pictures of the accused gunman on their Facebook page.
He’s identified as 31-year-old Julian Keyon Redding.
Police say the two men have known each other for years and the shooting may have grown out of an earlier confrontation over damaged property.
The victim’s mother said the suspect should surrender.
“He’s a coward. He had the nerve enough to shoot my son, he should have the nerve to turn himself
Police aren’t sure of the suspect’s whereabouts, and say it’s possible he left Georgia.
