ATLANTA — A member of the Atlanta Ballet has been diagnosed with a contagious disease.

The dancer is suffering from mumps.

Mumps comes from a virus and can cause swelling of the face and jaw.

The Atlanta Ballet says the dancer is OK.

Officials said they've alerted everyone involved in show production for the ballet and the staff at the Fox Theatre.

Mumps can be prevented with the measles, mumps and rubella (MMR) vaccine, so those who are up-to-date on their vaccinations should be protected. If you or your child have not been vaccinated against mumps, or develop any of the following symptoms, please seek medical attention as soon as possible for proper diagnosis and treatment:

•         Swelling of the cheeks and/salivary glands
•         Fever
•         Achy/tired feeling
