CHEROKEE COUNTY, Ga. - A man is in custody after Cherokee County deputies found him with multiple knives and other weapons near a school in Canton.
Cherokee County sheriff's officials said 31-year-old Todd Christopher Grigg, of Woodstock, is being held for questioning at the Cherokee County Sheriff's Office.
Officials said he was armed with a BB gun that resembled a semi-automatic handgun, three knives and leather gloves.
Grigg was arrested about 7:30 a.m. Wednesday outside the Cherokee Charter School at Sixes Road. That's where deputies were assisting with traffic when they observed a suspicious man, later identified as Grigg, standing on school property.
"Deputies attempted to make contact with him. When they did that, he started walking away and, at some point, started running. Deputies were able to chase him down and get him stopped," said Cherokee County Sheriff Roger Garrison.
Garrison said two officers had to draw their weapons to get Grigg subdued.
Garrison told Channel 2 investigative reporter Mark Winne that the suspect told deputies he was waiting for his ride. But Garrison said deputies weren't going to take any chances.
"We don't know if we believe that or not, however, the mere fact is he's on the property the day after this other shooting," said Garrison, referring to a shooting that happened at Ronald E. McNair Discovery Learning Academy in DeKalb County.
"It's troubling?" asked Winne.
"It's very, very troubling," replied Garrison.
Garrison told Winne that the deputies who made the arrest had attended previous active shooter training at Cherokee Charter School, where Grigg was arrested.
Winne will have updates on this developing story on Channel 2 Action News starting at 4.
