Applebee's murder suspects appear in court

The two men accused of killing a young father outside a Fayetteville Applebee’s appeared in court Thursday.

The victim’s family was in court, seeing the suspects for the first time. They told Channel 2’s Audrey Washington it was difficult to see the men in court but knew they had to be there for Greg Smith.

Smith was shot and killed on June 7 outside the Applebee’s restaurant on Glynn Street.

On Wednesday, police arrested two men in connection to the killing.

Greg Haney Jr., 24, of Jonesboro is charged with felony murder, malice murder, armed robbery, possession of a firearm by a convicted felon and aggravated assault.

Ledarrius Jawon Jackson, 25, of Hampton has also been charged in the case. He was arrested on charges of party to the crime of felony murder, malice murder, armed robbery and aggravated assault.
Haney is a former employee of Applebee’s.
"It was hard to see how young they were and to realize that they committed a violent, senseless act. They are young adults themselves. To see them going down this path was really hard,” said Smith’s cousin Jessalyn Dorsey.

Investigators say numerous tips lead them to the suspects. They believe robbery was the motive.

Smith’s family says they plan to be at every single court date, in honor of their loved one.

"We will be here every step of the process, however long it takes," Dorsey says.

Both Haney and Jackson are due back in court on July 8 for a bond hearing.
