Woman reports attack at Red Top Mountain

BARTOW COUNTY, Ga. — Channel 2 Action News has learned of a second attack on a hiking trail in recent days in metro Atlanta.

The incident comes a week after a brutal attack on the Silver Comet Trail in Paulding County. An attacker there ambushed a solo hiker and beat her around the head and face. The latest incident, which happened around 10 a.m. Tuesday, involved an 18-year-old attacked with a Taser on Red Top Mountain State Park in Bartow County.

Deputies say the victim had become separated from her group and was cycling alone on the Iron Hill Trail. She encountered a Taser-wielding man about a third of a mile down the trail in a remote part of Red Top State Mountain.

"She told us that someone was laying in the woods and had "Tasered" her. She was trembling and crying and upset," said Steve Wood.

Wood says he and his wife had come across the teen after they'd finished a lap on the trail.

Wood says he didn't have a description, or any other details about the suspect he could give to arriving deputies.

"I didn't see anybody or anything crazy," said Wood.

Bartow County deputies are investigating the woman's report.

"You could see on her bicycle helmet that there were scratches could be consistent with the probes that come out of a Taser," said Bartow County Sheriff Clark Millsap.

Deputies are urging people, especially those out alone, to be aware of their surroundings.
