After Irma, few evacuees still remain at Atlanta Motor Speedway

ATLANTA — A week after Atlanta Motor Speedway opened its gates for Hurricane Irma evacuees, some still remain.

"It was extremely frustrating, exhilarating, a lot of anxiety," said Steve Williams, who left Florida to escape the storm.

For those in need, it's mostly cleared out now but there are few who say they still can't go home including Paul Fischser from central Florida.

"Brevard County says it will be two weeks before we can get back in. They still have all of the power lines down. There's no water," he explained.

Most of the people who remain are RVers, whose campgrounds are not able to house them.

"I'm still staying here because I wanted to make sure by the time I got home that all the power was on, all the utilities were functioning," said Steve Williams.

Now Williams believes the time has come for him - he plans on leaving Friday morning.

Donations taken in by the Henry County Sheriff's Office and the Georgia chapter of Noble will be right behind him. Deputies started collecting supplies for Hurricane Harvey victims last week.

They say the need shifted to our neighbors to the south, a place these folks know won't be the same when they return.

"It's devastating. It's going to take a long time to repair," said Fischer.

Everyone told Channel 2's Carl Willis they are grateful for the hospitality and thankful that they were able to get out of harm's way.

"There are so many other people out there who have got it way worse than we do," Williams said.
