Suspect accused of killing Vietnam vet helping niece move surrenders

ATLANTA — Channel 2 Action News has learned that the man wanted for the deadly shooting of a Vietnam vet who was trying to help his niece move out, has surrendered to police.

Investigators said Donald Woods, 57, shot and killed Otha Orr Thursday after getting into a struggle.

Witness told Channel 2’s Tom Regan people were running for cover.

“I saw him point the gun, then I heard the shots and I kicked it into reverse," witness Gia Banks told Regan.

Banks said she drove into the middle of a wild struggle and shooting outside the apartments complex on Peeple's Street.

“It was like OK, I'm praying, backing my van up," Banks said.

Police said Orr and his brother came to a niece’s apartment to help her move out. But they said the woman's boyfriend, Donald Woods, started an argument and then grabbed his gun.

“He came out and hit me in the head with the gun, and then them and my brother were struggling with the gun," brother Edmund Orr said.

Otha Orr, a Vietnam veteran, lost the struggle and was shot twice and died.

“He'd been to Vietnam, he come home to get killed," Orr said.

Edmond Orr said the gunman shot at him but missed.

Banks said she picked up the victim's niece, who told her she was in an abusive relationship.

“She said she knew he had guns, but never thought he would do this," Banks said.

Other witnesses said it's a blessing the gunman didn't shoot anyone else on the street.

“A lot of kids go through here and go up to the pool and stuff, so anybody could have got hit,” witness Felix Hill said.
