5 injured after deck collapse in Brookhaven apartment complex

DEKALB COUNTY, Ga. — Two children and three adults were injured when a deck collapsed in a Brookhaven apartment complex.

Witnesses said people were below and standing on the deck when it collapse at the Northeast Plaza Apartments off Buford Highway Saturday night.

“It all of a sudden fell,” resident Rose Randall-Noriega said. “It could have been prevented.”

She said that residents have complained to management about the deck before, and that other decks lean the same way.

The residents worry it could happen again.

One child was pinned beneath the rubble under the deck, injuring his leg, according to authorities.

The 11-year-old's older brother said he is recovering following surgery on his leg, and is expected to recover.

DeKalb County Fire and Rescue is still investigating the cause but said it does not appear the structure overloaded.

They will then work with the apartment’s management and code enforcement to make any needed repairs.

Calls made by Channel 2's Steve Gehlbach to the apartment complex have not yet been returned.
