5 killed in head-on crash near Savannah

POOLER, Ga. — A head-on crash has left 5 people dead on Interstate 16 near Savannah early Wednesday morning.

The crashed happened around 5:55 a.m. near exit 155 in Pooler.

The Georgia State Patrol says a red Ford Mustang traveling in the westbound lanes crossed the median and struck a grey Kia Soul traveling in the eastbound lanes.

Three people in the Mustang and two in the Soul all died at the scene.

The victims in the Mustang were identified by GSP as: driver Aundrey Douglas, 49, of Claxton, front passenger Willie Braggs, 62, of Glennville and back passenger Devon Mobley, 24, of Claxton.

The victims in the Soul were identified as driver Judith Vincent, 66, of Eden and front passenger Ronne White, 44, of Eden.

Several lanes were shut down for hours due to the investigation.

The Chatham Emergency Management Agency says eastbound traffic was diverted to Pooler Parkway ramps.

Update: I-16 EB is closed near mm155. EB Traffic is diverted over Pooler Pkwy ramps. Drivers urged to seek alternate routes.

GSP is continuing to investigate.

The area has seen a number of crashes, including one in which another 5 people were killed.

A tractor-trailer struck three cars and a pickup truck before hitting another tractor-trailer in May 2015 before hitting a third tractor-trailer. Two of the tractor-trailers and one of the cars, a Honda, caught fire, according to the GSP.

Earlier in 2015, 5 Georgia Southern nursing students were killed on a crash on I-16, about 20 miles from Wednesday's wreck.
