Teens accused in deadly botched carjacking waive court appearance

DEKALB COUNTY, Ga. — The three teens accused of killing a woman during an attempted carjacking at a DeKalb County gas station waived their first court appearance Monday.

Shaneku McCurty, 25, was gunned down as she fought off the men when they tried to steal her car at the station on Redan Road on Oct. 23, according to police.

McCurty died at the hospital.

Police arrested Cameron Williams, 16, Jermaine Grant, 16, and 15-year-old Demonte Grant the next day.

DeKalb County Police Chief Dr. Cedric Alexander said McCurty was just an innocent victim who was trying to do good in the community.

"She is just an innocent person who drives up in to a store. [She] gets out, walks in, makes her purchase and comes back to her vehicle," Alexander said. "She offered something to this community, doing good trying to make something good for someone else."

The suspects are facing murder charges.
