3 children injured in crash near schools

JACKSON COUNTY, Ga. — Three siblings were seriously injured in a crash in Commerce near a cluster of schools Thursday morning.

The Jackson County Sheriff’s Department said the crash happened around 7:25 a.m. at U.S. 441 and Hoods Mill Road.

A witness told Channel 2's Tyisha Fernandes that a white car, which had the 3 children in it, tried to cross the highway. A pickup truck then T-boned the car, causing the truck to flip. A blue car then hit the truck while it was flipped over.

The victims were: a 3rd grader at East Jackson Elementary School and two 15-year-old sophomores at East Jackson High School, according to a Jackson County School spokesperson.

The 3rd grader was airlifted to Grady Memorial Hospital. The teens were taken to Athens Regional Hospital.

A school official said the teens' injuries got worse, so one was flown to Atlanta Medical Center and the other was taken there by ambulance.

Jackson County Schools said the three were being driven to school by their father.

A Jackson County resident, whose son was also involved in the accident, said the intersection is dangerous.

“We've had several wrecks here, we tried to get a red light but they won't talk to us,” said Dewey Baker.

A Department of Transportation official told Fernandes that they looked at the intersection and for now determined that a traffic light isn't necessary. The official said several studies must be done in order to get a traffic light installed.

The Georgia State Patrol is investigating the crash.
