JONESBORO, Ga. - More than a dozen wanted suspects were rounded up in a warrant sweep in Clayton County.
“Routinely, we go around to all of the hotels or known areas where transient people tend to congregate,” Sheriff Kem Kimbrough told Channel 2’s Amy Napier Viteri.
Viteri was with investigators as they hauled away a man wanted on assault charges out of Griffin. Another man, who said he was unaware of a warrant for him, was arrested on sexual assault charges out of California.
Over the course of the evening, investigators found drugs, paraphernalia and weapons, including a sawed-off shotgun. In total, deputies arrested 19 people, some of whom are convicted felons. They also recovered two guns from convicted felons.
Kimbrough said he wants to send a message that hotels in the county are for legitimate customers, not people hiding out from the authorities. He said cooperation from neighbors and businesses is key, and that warrant sweeps prompted by citizens complaining about criminal activity.
“The vast majority of the businesses support our activity and indeed, they will call us and give us information,” Kimbrough said.
