Clark Atlanta University student shot steps away from campus

ATLANTA — A Clark Atlanta University student was critically injured in a shooting steps away from campus.

Officers responded to the incident just before 12:20 a.m. Friday in the 800 block of Beckwith Street, police told Channel 2 Action News. Police told Channel 2's Audrey Washington it's a popular rooming house that's mostly rented out by students.

Police said someone walked up to the home and pounded on the door. That's when 22-year-old Craig S. Burns answered the door and was shot in the stomach, according to police.

A witness told Washington he heard the gunman and the victim argue over a girl. He also claims there was another person with the shooter.

Burns was taken to Grady Memorial Hospital. Police said the man who pulled the trigger took off.

Washington spoke with a Clark Atlanta University student who said he saw some of the commotion following the shooting. He said violence is not unusual in the neighborhood.

"It’s dangerous, really, a lot of killings, shootings and robberies," Zachery Raines said. “You always have to be prepared.”

No arrests have been reported.

Burns' family is enroute to Atlanta from Indiana, according to a release from the university.

"Our hearts are hurting and we ask that everyone in the CAU Campus Community join us in prayer for his restoration and healing, and for his family and friends, as well."

Atlanta police are asking anyone with information to come forward.
