Police: Ice played role in fatal Gwinnett Co. crash

GWINNETT COUNTY, Ga. — Ronald Reagan Parkway was closed through the morning as police investigated a fatal multi-car crash.

Gwinnett County police said three vehicles were involved in a crash near the intersection with Five Forks Trickum Road.

Police said one driver died on the scene and an 8-year-old in the same vehicle was trapped inside. He was cut out and airlifted to Scottish Rite in critical condition.

Police said the crash started when a car hit a patch of ice in the eastbound lanes, spun into a truck and both vehicles crossed the median into oncoming traffic.

"It was spinning and turning around. When the car was spinning, I tried to avoid the accident and I received impact in that corner," driver Pedro Perichi said.

Perichi said told Channel 2's Steve Gehlbach his vehicle was struck by the truck

Road crews came out to put down sand and salt to melt the ice on the roadway.

The crash happened around 7 a.m. Monday. Traffic resumed before noon.
