Over 1 inch of rain has fallen so far -- but more, including wet snow mix, possible

ATLANTA — Scattered showers have moved into the southern part of the metro and the rainy weather is expected to stick around until Sunday.

Starting Tuesday morning, rain will move in and become more widespread through midday. By the afternoon commute, areas mainly north of Interstate 20 will see widespread rain. South of I-20, showers will be more spotty.

"Not all day long, but there will be nice breaks in between the rain, but nevertheless the rain will be relentless throughout this week and into the weekend," said Severe Weather Team 2 Chief Meteorologist Glenn Burns.

We're using powerful weather technology to accurately predict what the weather will be in your area, on Channel 2 Action News This Morning, starting at 4:30 a.m.

Burns said that, by Sunday, parts of northeast Georgia could see an isolated 5 to 7 inches of rain. Most of that area will see 3 to 5 inches through Saturday night.

Because of that, the National Weather Service has issued a flood watch for several of those northeastern counties starting Tuesday morning, and the watch will last until Friday morning.

In the heart of Atlanta, an accumulation of only 1 to 3 inches of rain throughout the week is expected.

Tuesday morning, lows will dip into the mid-30s across extreme north Georgia and some of those areas could see a mix of wintry weather.

"We may see a little bit of sleet or possibly some freezing rain briefly as the precipitation begins," Burns said.

Highs for Tuesday will only reach into the mid- to upper 40s as a wedge of cold air sets in.

That will change heading into Wednesday, with highs reaching the mid-50s. The temperature will continue to rise the rest of the week, with highs in the mid-60s heading into the weekend.
