ATHENS, Ga. - An Athens man died after he was shot by a police officer several times on Friday night.

Officer Lou Pasqualetti saw two men arguing inside an apartment near downtown, Athens-Clarke police Maj. Mike Shockley said. He said one of the men, 53-year-old Samuel Thomas Cunningham III, was wearing a blood-stained shirt and holding a knife to the throat of 55-year-old John Willie Jennings.

Shockley said the officer thought Cunningham was about to kill Jennings and fired three shots through a closed screen door, killing Cunningham.

The Georgia Bureau of Investigation is investigating the shooting. The officer is on paid leave pending the outcome of the investigation.
