Keep Atlanta Beautiful: Community Recycling Center

Keep Atlanta Beautiful’s (KAtlB) electronics recycling collection now accepts paper, post consumer polystyrene, popularly known as styrofoam, and paint donations for $2.00/container. The recycling center is located in Atlanta’s Old Fourth Ward neighborhood at the Walden School, 320 Irwin Street, Atlanta, GA 30312. Collection days are every 2nd Saturday of the month from 10am - 3pm. Congressman Scott Announces Scholarship Opportunities

The CBC Scholarships were established in 1988 in response to federal cuts in education spending.  The scholarships are awarded in the Congressional Districts of each member of the Congressional Black Caucus.  Since 2003, Congressman Scott and his wife, Mrs. Alfredia Scott, have awarded $119,000 in scholarships from the CBC Foundation to 65 students from Georgia’s Thirteenth Congressional District.  High school seniors or full-time undergraduate, graduate or professional school students from Congressman Scott’s District who have a minimum 2.5 grade point average can apply for the scholarships. 

Scholarships include:

  • CBC Spouses Visual Arts Scholarship – awards for students pursuing visual arts careers.  Deadline:  May 3, 2012.
  • CBC Spouses Heineken USA Performing Arts Scholarship – established in honor of the late Curtis Mayfield to assist students pursuing performing arts careers.  Deadline:  May 3, 2012.
  • CBC Spouses General Mills Health Scholarship – awards scholarships in the fields of medicine, engineering, technology, nutrition and other health-related professions.  Deadline:  May 31, 2012.
  • CBC Spouses Educational Scholarship – a national scholarship program for academically-talented and highly-motivated students pursuing full-time undergraduate, graduate or doctoral degrees.  Deadline:  May 31, 2012.

To apply for these scholarships, students must complete an online application at www.cbcfinc.org/scholarships.  All application materials must be submitted directly online and by the deadlines listed above. Metro Atlanta Public Safety: Flag Football League

The League is a 6 week season starting May 5th ending June 9th.  All games are played on Saturday.  There are 7 Teams that will play 3 games for 4 weeks.  The top 4 teams will begin the playoffs on the 5th week (June 2nd). The 6th week (June 9th) the top 2 teams will battle for the league CHAMPIONSHIP! Come out and support your public safety team … the season kicks off May 5, 2012 at 1pm at Hallford Memorial Stadium located at 3789 Memorial College Avenue, Clarkston, Georgia 30321. Admission: $5 –Adults & Kids 10 and older, Kids 9 and under are FREE!

Heritage Sandy Springs presents Movin’ Groovin’ Mornings

Heritage Sandy Springs presents Movin’ Groovin’ Mornings, a children’s summer series on the Sandy Springs Society Entertainment Lawn at Heritage Green. Designed as a fun and engaging opportunity for children ages 3 to 10 to enjoy creative movement and scientific exploration, these mornings will offer interactive activities incorporating music, dance, exercise and education.

Empowerment Resource Center: Take Charge Get Tested

The Empowerment Resource Center (ERC) will host its fifth annual Take Charge, Get Tested event on Wednesday, June 27, 2012 from 12pm to 6pm.  This community outreach campaign is expected to reach 500 Atlantans and provide a free rapid HIV test to as many people as will come out.   The event will be an outdoor health fair taking place at Hurt Park, 100 Edgewood Avenue SE. Visit the website for more information.

Family Fun Day

Dekalb County Commissioner Lee May has partnered with Bransby Outdoor YMCA Center at Rock Chapel and Beverly Cunningham Outreach Program to create a fun outing the whole community can enjoy, Family Fun Day! This is an opportunity to generate corporate publicity and community goodwill while demonstrating commitment to the community.
