The best actors and actresses in Georgia musical theater were honored at the Cobb Energy Performing Arts Centre Tuesday night at the Shuler Hensley Awards.

The awards are named for Tony Award-winner and Marietta native Shuler Hensley.

The Shuler Awards are part of the National High School Musical Theater Awards and are similar to other programs in the country, like the Tommy Tune Awards in Houston and the Gene Kelly Awards in Pittsburgh.

Hundreds of high school actors and actresses, students who work behind the scenes, drama teachers and parents gathered to see who would take home the Shuler Award in 15 categories. Forty-two school participated in the fourth annual event.

WSB-TV's Jovita Moore and Fred Blankenship hosted the event. Prior to the awards show, nominees walked the red carpet outside of the Cobb Energy Centre.

The night included performances from the schools nominated for Overall Production as well as an opening and closing number that included Hensley.

Evan Greenberg of Riverwood International Charter School won the Leading Actor Award for his portrayal of William Barfee in "The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee."

Brittany Dankwa of Tri-Cities High School won the Leading Actress Award for her portrayal of Celie in "The Color Purple."

Milton High School took home the Overall Production Shuler Award for the school's production of "The Drowsy Chaperone."
