Elderly Man Shoots Home Invader

DEKALB COUNTY, Ga. — Police found an intruder an elderly man said he shot during a home invasion.

The shooting happened at a home on Meadowbrooke Chase in DeKalb County just before 2 a.m. Thursday.

Detectives said the robber checked himself into the emergency room. Officers said they found him there getting treated for a bullet wound to his leg.

The 84-year-old man who lives by himself in his Stone Mountain home told Channel 2 Action News reporter Darryn Moore that he was upstairs asleep when the intruder broke in.

He said he woke up when he heard someone breaking in through the basement door.

The homeowner said he grabbed his gun, which was sitting next to his bed.

When the invader reached the steps heading upstairs, the homeowner said he was waiting for him and shot him.

The homeowner said he shot three times, hitting the intruder once.

The person ran back downstairs, leaving a trail of blood throughout the house. He ran back down to the basement and got away on foot, the homeowner said.

The suspect was treated at the hospital and released to police. He has been charged with burglary.

His name has not been released.
