Dad speaks out after teacher, daughter shot at preschool

ROCKDALE COUNTY, Ga.,None — The father of a 10-year-old shot in front of a Rockdale County preschool Tuesday fought back tears after seeing his daughter at the hospital.

"That's my baby. She's not too good right now. She's in critical condition right now, with a gunshot wound to the head," Williams said of his daughter, Corrine.

The girl is recovering at Children's Healthcare of Atlanta at Egleston since being shot by her stepfather, according to Rockdale County sheriff's deputies. Deputies said Corrine and her mother, identified as Kimya Motley Roberson, arrived at Little Mountain Christian Academy around 6:30 a.m. Tuesday, where Roberson's estranged husband, Terence, was waiting for them.

Deputies said he confessed to opening fire on them, striking the mother and daughter several times as Roberson unloaded her daughter from the car. According to deputies, Roberson turned himself in at the Newton County Sheriff's Office about three hours after the shooting, saying his life was falling apart.

Family members said the couple had been separated for a year or more and that the girl's mother, a teacher at C.J. Hicks Elementary School, had recently filed for divorce.

"We don't know how this happened and definitely don't know why it happened," said the girl's grandmother Margaret Thompkins.

Family members said Roberson was shot in the face and neck and Corinne was shot in the head. The girl's father and grandmother are praying for her healing.

"To see her that way was very difficult, very difficult. The next 48 hours are going to be critical. She has a lot of swelling in the brain, but we have to wait and see what's going to happen," Thompkins said.

Terence Roberson is charged with two counts of aggravated assault. He is scheduled for a court hearing Wednesday.

Terrence Roberson has at least one prior domestic violence-related arrest. Newton County released records showing deputies booked him into jail three times. The latest was in January for a probation violation stemming from a domestic simple battery arrest in early 2010. Montgomery County sentenced him to 12 months' probation in 2008 for a bad check. Rockdale County is not releasing Roberson's arrest record.
