1 dead in officer-involved shooting

LILBURN — Gwinnett County police are investigating a shooting where one of their officers opened fire.

According to Cpl. Jake Smith, an officer responded to a domestic dispute call Wednesday night along Southgate Circle in Lilburn.

"The son was acting erratically and one of the family members called police," Smith said.

Smith said the 20-year-old son greeted the officer with a gun.

"Before he could even approach the driveway of the home, the subject of the call came outside and he was armed with a small handgun," Smith said.

Smith said the man began yelling at the officer and telling him he was not needed. He said the officer spent two minutes trying to reason with the man and telling him to drop the gun.

"At the end of the two minutes, the subject presented the gun and pointed the gun at the officer and the officer shot one time and the subject was struck and killed," Smith said.

Police said detectives interviewed family members in the home to determine what set the man off.

The officer involved was placed on administrative leave for at least three days.
