Bystander Hit In Shopping Center Shootout

ATLANTA,None — As many as eight shots were fired at about 4:30 p.m. Sunday in a busy shopping center parking lot.

It happened at the corner of Caroline Street and Moreland Avenue near the Edgewood Shopping Center, police said.

Lt. Darin Schierbaum said the Sunday evening shooting involved a running gun battle between people in two moving vehicles. It appeared the shots were aimed at a Penske truck in the lot, Atlanta police said. The Penske truck tried to drive away and ended up causing an accident. Meanwhile, an innocent bystander was shot in the back. Police are interviewing people from the Penske truck and witnesses.

Police told Channel 2 Action News that the 30-year-old victim was taken to Grady Hospital and last listed in stable condition.

Schierbaum said there were security cameras in the parking lot that could produce evidence.

Police said they have recovered a silver Mercedes that they believe may have been involved. Two people were being questioned Sunday night. Police have labeled them "persons of interest."
