Updated:ATLANTA - Severe Weather Team 2 meteorologist David Chandley said the heat dome will blanket north Georgia on Friday allowing high temps to soar into the 90s to near 100.
"With hot air at the surface and warm air aloft, the thunderstorm machine will take a break today," said Chandley.
The forecast high for Atlanta is 97 degrees -- the record high is 98 set in 1986. Athens should top 100 degrees. Their record high is 102 set in 1999.
There is a heat advisory for parts of east Georgia including Athens, Madison and Eatonton for heat index values topping 105.
Chandley said there is just a slight risk for thunderstorms this weekend, as highs will hold in the mid-90s.
