James Brown's Son-In-Law Accused Of Rape

Thursday, July 27, 2006 – updated: 10:37 am EDT July 28, 2006

The son-in-law of entertainer James Brown is a wanted man in Fulton County. An arrest warrant has been issued for Darren Anthony Lumar – a prominent Atlanta businessman.

Darren Anthony Lumar is the managing partner of Pinnacle International Partners located in the SunTrust building. Today, a Fulton County judge issued an arrest warrant for the man recently inducted as a UN Goodwill Ambassador. He was a no-show in court Thursday where two former employees said he raped one of them and wrote bad checks to both of them.

Standing before a judge, Jasmine Palmer and Aphrodite Mitchell explain why their former employer, Darren Anthony Lumar, better known as “Chip” Lumar, should be arrested. Palmer says her ex-boss raped her and gave her bad checks.

"He’ll make his advances towards me, grope me and touch on me and I tried to not say anything and tried to just brush it off, but it was just getting overbearing. Then he got me cornered up in a room, basically, and forced himself on me,” says Jasmine Palmer.

Palmer says when she spoke up she got fired and got a check she couldn’t cash.

That’s the reason Mitchell was in court.

“I basically wanted to get my money. I worked for Mr. Lamar and the first couple of checks that came through – they were fine. But then the last check – it bounced and now I’m owed at least 5 weeks worth of pay,” says Mitchell.

Lamar’s attorney, Saundra Davis, asked that both warrants be dismissed – saying there was insufficient evidence in Palmer’s case and arguing Mitchell’s case was a civil matter.

In the end the judge issued the warrant Palmer wanted for the rape allegations and bad checks, but told Mitchell to pursue her case in civil court.

Lumar’s attorney, Saundra Davis, declined comment. Channel 2 also tried to reach Mr. Lumar at his company, but haven’t heard back.
