Lori Geary's Blog

At Democratic National Convention

8/28

It's taken a while to blog again because if we're not working we're walking! Our poor crews who have to lug all this equipment for what seems likes miles!

Here we are at Mile High Stadium. I have never seen so many media in one place. The folks in front of our live shot area are from Australia!

This morning Damon McGhee, a photojournalist, and I went to the Unity breakfast. Both Congressman John Lewis and Rev. Joseph Lowery told me they never thought they'd live to see this day come. Bernice King told me this is a continuation of her father's movement. Martin Luther King III told me his Mom and Dad are smiling today.

It’s hard to believe it’s only day two of the Convention! There has been so much packed into the last two days. The gavel is just about to come down on day two and Atlanta Mayor Shirley Franklin is on stage to open the Convention. She’s one of the co-chairs. We have several Georgians heavily involved in the Convention. Former President Jimmy Carter was on stage last night with Former First Lady Rosalyn Carter. Congressman John Lewis and Reverend Joseph Lowery will be speaking Thursday at the Unity breakfast, marking the 45th anniversary of the march on Washington.

Now for a little personal background! There’s a lot of walking here in Denver. Our parking lot is not close to the Pepsi Convention Center so it’s tough for our guys to get all of the equipment to our work space in the ABC pavilion. Monica is wearing flats and I’ve resorted to sneakers. The media work out of tents and trailers outfitted with all of the wires and connections we need for feeds, power, etc. We were all feeling a little out of shape walking up the steps of the Pepsi Convention Center until we came up with a good excuse – the altitude!

It was no doubt a very emotional start to the Convention.

There were a lot of tears in Georgia's delegation when Senator Ted Kennedy took to the stage. Everyone was commenting how good the "patriarch" of their party looked and how well he spoke.

I was on the floor when Former President Carter and First Lady Rosalyn Carter came out from behind the curtain. Every member of Georgia's delegation jumped out, raising their flags. It was a truly electrifying moment.

Michelle Obama's speech hit home with Georgians. Our delegates told me this morning they liked hearing the personal side of their story. Seeing Senator Obama interacting with his daughters culminated what many are calling a very successful start to the convention.

If there's one criticism I heard about from last night, many delegates are waiting for democrats to attack Senator McCain, especially because the Republicans are using Hillary Clinton to try and divide the party. There's a lot of anticipation for Senator Clinton's speech. The stakes are high as she tries to convince her 18 million supporters to support this demcratic ticket even though her name is absent.
