Storms Lash Metro Atlanta

Lightning Strike Causes House Fire

Posted: 10:06 pm EDT June 2, 2006

Thunderstorms rolled through Metro Atlanta Friday night, knocking down trees, making roadways hazardous and causing at least one lightning-related fire.

Several people reported tornados touching down in Clayton County and Henry County, but no touchdowns were confirmed by meteorologists.

A two-story house caught fire in the 2400 block of Meadow Grove Way in Lilburn after a lightning strike.

No injuries were reported, but four people were displaced.

A pine tree crashed into a house in Suwanee. No one was home at the time.

Bartow County residents started cleaning up after high winds uprooted trees and knocked out their power.

"It was bad," one woman told WSB-TV. "It was scary, real scary. With all that lightning, I was very afraid."

A church in southwest Atlanta lost its chimney when lightning struck it, but the church itself did not catch fire.

Wet roads made for dangerous driving in the metro area. A semi-trailer truck overturned at I-285 and I-20 on the west side of the city.

Hartsfield Jackson International Airport reported delays of almost 3 hours for incoming flights.
