Suspect Hit, Killed By Police Car

Tuesday, May 23, 2006 – updated: 5:39 pm EDT May 23, 2006

Distraught family members descended on the scene of a fatal accident on Washington Road in East Point Tuesday, and identified the man that was hit and killed as Lewis Pakow Asamoah.

East Point had listed Asamoah as “Armed and Dangerous” and he was wanted for a motor vehicle hijacking.

Police say it started with a call of a suspicious person at a nearby motel. An officer arriving on the scene asked Asamoah to stop, but he instead ran across Washington Road.

Marcia Turney, who witnessed the incident, says the officer’s vehicle lights and sirens were not on when he pursued the suspect into a parking lot and struck him with the car. Turney says the victim bounced off the front hood and then appeared to go under one of the car’s wheels.

Turney says that she saw the officers handcuff the suspect and place him in the back of the police car before they realized the suspect was in trouble. She says she saw the officers remove the suspect from the car and place him on the ground. She also says she saw them attempt to revive the suspect using CPR.

The suspect was pronounced dead at the hospital. Asamoah’s family have identified him as the man who was killed, but the police have not released that information. They have also not released the name of the officer involved. The Georgia State Patrol is involved in the investigation and is in the process of interviewing the officer.
