Franklin Will Veto Freebies

Thursday, May 18, 2006

Mayor Shirley Franklin says she'll veto the new ethics rule that would allow Atlanta city council members to accept meals and entertainment tickets from lobbyists.

The council voted Monday to allow free meals up to $75 and free tickets to local events.

They would not be allowed to sell or trade those tickets.

Franklin has until midnight tonight to veto the legislation.

But only ten votes would be required to overturn a veto.

The council voted 11-2 in favor of the new ethics standards.
