It's Official: Tornados Hit Metro Area
Residents Recount Close Calls, Start Clean-Up

ATLANTA -- As residents recounted close calls with danger, the National Weather Service confirmed Saturday what many suspected -- tornados caused much of the storm damage across Metro Atlanta.
Two twisters touched down in Cobb County, including one near the Cherokee County line.
Two other tornadoes touched down in Polk County -- in Cedartown and Rockmart -- northwest of Atlanta, the weather service said.
Despite widespread damage, no injuries have been reported.
Rescue crews had to use a ladder to help a Cobb County woman who was trapped in her bedroom, but her husband said she was lucky.
"She had just stood up and was closing the window when the tree came down behind her and landed on the bed," Todd Horton told WSB-TV.
Nearby, a tree crashed into a child's bedroom but the boy was spending the night with grandparents.
Georgia Power said 3,000 customers remained without electricity Saturday night in Metro Atlanta. The utility hoped to restore everybody's power by midnight.
In Alpharetta, high winds destroyed a car wash and severely damaged a car repair shop across the street.
"All of a sudden it was really calm," repair shop owner Lisa Rowland said, fighting back tears. "The rain was plummeting, and the windows were bowing. I just knew something bad was happening."
Witnesses insist a twister did the damage.
"It was a tornado," Victor Turner said. "I saw the funnel cloud come over. You can see little pieces of plywood went right through the windshield of a car -- you know, 160 mile per hour winds -- it just went right through it, like it was butter. Everybody's lucky nobody was here when it happened. It would have been really bad."
