Suspected Car Thief Crashes into Funeral Home

Bystanders Helped Collar Driver

Posted: 12:09 pm EDT August 25, 2005Updated: 1:54 pm EDT August 25, 2005

A driver was in police custody Thursday after the vehicle he was driving, which had been reported stolen, slammed into a funeral home in northeast Atlanta.

Bystanders grabbed the man, whose identity was pending, after he tried to flee the scene shortly after the incident occurred.

The crash happened shortly after noon at the Haugabrooks Funeral Home, located on Hillard Street near Auburn Avenue. No injuries have been reported.

Rescue workers trying to remove the Lincoln Town Car had to first stabilize the building, which partially collapsed during the collision.

A witness said the incident began when the driver was traveling the wrong way down a one-way street. An Atlanta police officer blew his horn at the driver, who then crashed the vehicle into the funeral home.

Police said the vehicle was believed to have been stolen from its owner.

A funeral home worker said he was in the room that the car crashed into shortly before impact but had left momentarily to run an errand. No services were being conducted at the time of the crash, although officials said they plan to hold upcoming services as scheduled.

Channel 2 Action News reporter Joyce Oscar contributed to this report.
