Arrest Ends Gun Battle, Police Chase

Suspect Exchanged Bullets With Police

Thursday, August 18, 2005 – updated: 2:54 pm EDT August 18, 2005

One man was recovering at a metro area hospital and a second one was in police custody Thursday following a gun battle, shooting and police pursuit in Clayton County.

Scene

The incident ended shortly before 11 a.m. on Forest Parkway just west of Ga. 42 near Fort Gillem in Forest Park. The victim was rushed for medical treatment to Southern Regional Medical Center, although his condition and identity were not immediately known. A police officer suffered a minor graze wound during the incident.

Authorities said the incident began on Havenridge Drive when a man and a woman were sitting inside a parked black Acura. Police Capt. Jeff Turner said an officer who was called to the scene observed the man inside the car reach over the woman and fire a bullet at a man who was standing outside the car, striking that man in the abdomen.

The car then fled from the scene and was pursued by the Clayton police officer during a pursuit that lasted about 10 minutes. The woman who was in the vehicle jumped from the car during the chase, police said.

The suspect's car crashed into a police cruiser and gunfire was exchanged between officers and the suspect's car as both wrecked vehicles were parked side by side.

The suspect, identified as Timothy Orlando Wyatt, 29, then surrendered. Police said he is facing several charges in connection with the incident.

Channel 2 Action News reporter Ross Cavitt contributed to this report.
