Arrest Made in Stone Mountain Park Killing

Posted: 11:40 am EDT July 22, 2005Updated: 4:56 pm EDT July 22, 2005

Authorities have made an arrest in connection with the slaying last week of a Stone Mountain park attendant, law enforcement officials said Friday.

Mark Anthony Woolf

A judge declined Friday to set bond for Mark Anthony Woolf, 36, during an initial court appearance in connection with the killing of Anita Redmon. The 63-year-old woman was gunned down at 12:30 a.m. Saturday during an apparent robbery attempt, said John Bankhead, a spokesman for the Georgia Bureau of Investigation.

Woolf was expected to return to court for a preliminary hearing in the case that was scheduled for Sept. 7. Woolf has been charged with conspiracy to commit armed robbery.

As he was being escorted to his court hearing, Woolf said he was not guilty of murder. He declined comment when asked if he sought to solicit help for robbery.

According to an affidavit, Woolf asked a man to rob the west gate at Stone Mountain Park on July 4, two weeks before the park attendant was gunned down.

According to officials, the unidentified man declined to participate in the request.

As of Friday, Woolf had not been charged with murder. Bankhead said Woolf was identified after investigators received a tip from the public. He did not elaborate on the statement.

"This is just a piece of the puzzle that apparently fit into our picture," Bankhead said. "We have an idea of what that picture is."

Authorities have said the killing was the first such incident in the history of the park. Redmon, who served with the Doraville Police Department for 25 years before retiring in 1999, began working at the park just three months ago.

Redmon's brother praised the new development.

"This is another step in the right direction," he said, asking for help from anyone in the public. "We want to get this over with so the family can have some closure."

The reward for information leading to the arrest and conviction of whoever killed a Stone Mountain park employee has grown to $25,000.

Investigators also released two sketches of people of interest that authorities wanted to question.
