Postal Worker Shot in Gwinnett

Motive in Attack Unknown

A Gwinnett County man was in custody Wednesday after he surrendered to police shortly after a U.S. letter carrier was shot while making his mail deliveries.

Scene

The mail carrier was rushed for treatment to Gwinnett Medical Center after he was shot in the abdomen in the 4000 block of Tanglewood Road near Snellville shortly after 11:30 a.m. The victim's condition was pending.

Snellville Police Chief Roy Whitehead told the Atlanta Journal-Constitution that the shooting suspect, Bill Crutchfield, who is in his 50s, turned himself in shortly before noon.

The suspect lives on the street where the carrier was delivering mail. According to the AJC, Crutchfield refused to tell Snellville officers why he shot the postal carrier, but said he would talk to Gwinnett police.

Witnesses told police that the carrier was delivering mail when a resident of the neighborhood approached him and opened fire. The victim managed to get back into his truck and drive away but apparently stopped the truck and collapsed.

A resident called emergency workers as the suspect fled from the scene and drove to the police department.
