A former coach for a Paulding County junior high school has been arrested in connection with allegations that he allegedly molested a female student, authorities said.

Michael Thomas

Michael Thomas, 29, was being held Monday at the Paulding County Jail after he was taken into custody Sunday night, authorities said. He has been charged with child molestation and sexual exploitation of children, said Tim Shaw, of the Paulding County sheriff's office.

It was not immediately clear when the man would appear for an initial court hearing or whether or not bond has been set in the case.

The man, who no longer works at Herschel Jones Middle School, was a coach for seventh and eighth grade girls basketball and soccer. He also was the head football coach for boys and taught an in-school suspension class.

Authorities would not say whether the alleged incident occurred on campus or how the incident came to light.

Shaw said the victim is recovering.

"She's doing great," he said. "She's doing fantastic, which is the most important thing."

The school system has launched an internal investigation to determine if the alleged incidents occurred during the scope of the man's school duties.

Administrators said the man resigned his position at the end of the school year.
