Getaway Car Recovered

Police Find Much-Sought Green Honda In Garage Where It Was Stolen

Updated: 11:46 p.m. EST March 11, 2005

Latest developments in the Fulton County Courthouse rampage:

- Police have recovered the Green Honda allegedly stolen by triple-murder suspect Brian Nichols -- at the same parking garage where it was stolen.

- A man claiming to be Nichols called law enforcement authorities and threatened to kill Assistant District Attorney Gayle Abramson, the prosecutor handling his rape-kidnapping case, the D.A.'s office said.

- Channel Two Action News has learned that the suspect stole guns and ammunition clips from two deputies, not just one as earlier reported.

- Atlanta Police Chief Richard Pennington put his force on 12-hour shifts to intensify the search for Nichols.

The Honda Accord was recovered at Centennial Garage on Marietta Street in downtown Atlanta. Atlanta Journal-Constitution reporter Don O'Briant said Nichols carjacked the vehicle from him at the garage Friday morning, and pistol-whipped him when he refused to get into the trunk. A widespread search was under way all day for the car. The car was found one floor below the spot where it was stolen.

The call threatening Abramson's life came in at about 4:15 p.m., shortly after District Attorney Paul Howard gave a news conference about the courthouse killings. A spokesman for the D.A.'s office said he couldn't be certain the caller was Nichols. Nevertheless, Abramson was placed under heavy guard.

Channel Two has learned the suspect stole a second deputy's gun Friday morning after attacking Deputy Cynthia Hall and grabbing her weapon. The identity of the second deputy wasn't immediately released.

Hall was listed in critical but stable condition with a head injury at Grady Memorial Hospital. She may have hit her head falling to the ground or may have been grazed by a bullet, a trauma surgeon said, adding she was not shot in the mouth as earlier reported.

"He (Nichols) is very dangerous," Chief Pennington said. "He's still armed and until we get him off the street we will not rest."
