HAMPTON, Ga. -- A Henry County woman was sentenced to serve two years in prison after she pleaded guilty Tuesday to charges that she tried to hire a hitman last year to kill her estranged husband. After entering the plea, the Superior Court judge ordered Melissa Blankenship, 37, of Hampton to serve eight years on probation after she completes her prison time.
Through tears, she apologized to her husband, Johnnie Blankenship, during the sentencing portion of the hearing."I want to say I'm sorry for what I've done," Blankinship was quoted as saying by the Atlanta Journal-Constitution. "I was sick. I want to thank God that nothing happened to Johnnie."The woman was taken into custody in June after GBI officials learned the woman was seeking someone to kill her husband. The agency set her up with an undercover agent who met her in the parking lot of a Stockbridge Wal-Mart, during which the woman brought four of her children with her. A second meeting with the agent occurred while the woman's 5-week-old infant was with her.At the time of the arrest, officials said the woman gave the agent a shotgun to carry out the killing and promised to deliver $10,000 after collecting insurance money from her husband's death. The woman's attorney said the evidence was overwhelming against her client. The lawyer said prosecutors planned to introduce into evidence a videotape that showed the woman negotiating with the undercover agent.A psychologist for the woman testified that Blankenship was suffering from post-partum depression from the birth of a recent child. The witness also told the judge she suffered from a personality disorder and physical abuse from her husband. Her husband criticized the sentence after the courtroom hearing."I think it's the biggest travesty of justice that she only got two years," Johnnie Blankenship said. "She got two for trying to have me murdered. Does that make sense?"Channel 2 Action News reporter Alan Wang contributed to this report.
