Clayton County police were searching Sunday for the hit-and-run driver who was responsible for the death of a boy who was struck while he was riding his bike.

Scene

Police identified the suspected driver as Alberto Salinas, 25, who was allegedly behind the wheel of the 1990 Ford Ranger that struck Juan Fernando Chavez, 10, Saturday afternoon as he rode his bike in the 1100 block of Curtis Drive.

The boy suffered a serious injury to the head and was flown by helicopter to Eggleston Children's Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Authorities said Salinas is facing several charges, including vehicular homicide, leaving the scene of an accident and driving without a license.

Witnesses told police that the driver of the grey truck, which had yellow flames on the side, did not stop after the accident.

"The bicycle was all torn up and the boy was just laying there," neighbor Terry Jones said. "We didn't know if he was dead or not."

Police said the driver's truck has extensive damage to its front end. Witnesses said three letters on the truck's tag were ARI. Police urged the driver of the truck to surrender.

Anyone with information was asked to call Forest Park police at 404-366-4141.
