Vehicle Was Stolen From Sexual Assault Victim, Police Say

A police chase through the city of Decatur ended Thursday in northeast Atlanta with the arrest of a man who was driving a car stolen a day before from the home of a sexual assault victim.

Scene

The man, whose identity was pending, was taken into custody shortly before 12:30 p.m. after the pursuit ended at Freedom Parkway near Memorial Drive. No one was injured during the chase.

Police said the pursuit stemmed from the sexual assault of a woman that occurred Wednesday in Midtown Atlanta at a home on Argonne Avenue.

The woman told police that she left the door ajar in her home because of fumes from painting inside the home when a black male entered the residence and sexually assaulted her.

The woman's attacker stole her 1998 Honda Civic after the assault and struck three vehicles in Midtown while driving the wrong way down Piedmont Avenue following the assault.

Scene

Atlanta police had been looking for the vehicle after the woman reported the assault. The woman, who was not identified, was treated at a metro Atlanta hospital.

Police spotted the woman's car Thursday afternoon as it was traveling eastward on Ponce de Leon Avenue into Decatur. Officers chased the vehicle through the city at speeds that topped out around 50 miles per hour. The chase ended when the driver tried to drive between two poles to avoid stopped traffic.

"It was over from there," Officer Robert Jackson said. "He couldn't drive anywhere."
