Annual Marathon To Close Atlanta Streets

Thousands of runners hit the streets of Atlanta Sunday to compete in the fourth annual ING Georgia Marathon & Half Marathon.

Jynocel Basweti was the first man to cross the marathon finish line with a time of 2 hours, 20 minutes, 49 seconds.

Marathon runner Tatiana Mironova was the first woman to cross with a time of 2:54:54.

The event closed down some of the city's most utilized streets.

The marathon started and will finish at Centennial Olympic Park and takes runners through downtown Atlanta and the city of Decatur.

Roads like Marietta Street, Auburn Avenue, Edgewood Avenue, North Avenue, Ponce de Leon, Clairemont Avenue, N Decatur Road, Briarclif Road and roads around Piedmont Park closed as early as 6 a.m. Sunday and some will not open again until 2 p.m. Sunday.

In 2009, about 12,000 runners signed up to participate in the ING races.

The Atlanta Beltline is using a community land trust and an affordable housing trust fund that would keep and create more than 5,000 units of affordable housing in the city, Channel 2 Action News has learned.
