ATLANTA -- The Atlanta Police bomb squad gave the all clear Friday morning at The Temple, the landmark Jewish synagogue on Peachtree Street, after determining a suspicious package turned out to be a stack of newspapers.

Peachtree Street in front of The Temple reopened about 9 a.m. after being closed for about an hour.

Fire Capt. Rick Perdue said a caretaker discovered the package, described as a box wrapped in plastic.

Perdue said the package was about a foot and a half long and six inches wide and was found in a driveway.

Bomb squad officers checked it out and determined it was a stack of Jewish newspapers.

The Temple, home to Atlanta's oldest Jewish congregation, was the scene of a bombing in 1958 when approximately fifty sticks of dynamite tore through the side wall of the building. No one was injured in that blast.

Five men associated with white separatist groups were tried and acquitted for the 1958 bombing.
