Posted: 4:09 pm EST November 19, 2009

The Cobb County Police Department charged a 16-year-old driver with DUI after a crash injured three of his teenage passengers.

Police said a 16-year-old male from Acworth was driving a Toyota Corolla and attempting to make a left turn off Mars Hill Road onto Camden Lake Parkway. Officials said the teen failed to yield to the driver of a Volkswagen Passat and was hit.

Three teenage passengers in the Corolla -- an 18-year-old male, a 17-year-old male and a 16-year-old female -- were injured in the crash. All three passengers were taken to Wellstar Kennestone Hospital.

The female is listed in critical condition. The conditions of the other two teens was not released.

The driver of the Volkswagen, 79-year-old Gilbert James, was treated and released. He is not expected to be charged, police said.

The 16-year-old driver of the Toyota Corolla was arrested and taken to the Marietta Youth Detention Center. He was charged with DUI, failure to yield while turning left and serious injury by a motor vehicle.

The names of the teenagers have not been released.
