3 Alarm Fire Hits High-Rise For Seniors

A three-alarm fire forced the evacuation of a high-rise for senior citizens in southwest Atlanta Monday morning, according to Atlanta fire department officials.

The fire hit the facility at 1881 Myrtle Drive just after 9 a.m.

Channel 2 Action News reporter Ryan Young was at the scene and saw one firefighter being taken away on a stretcher.

Dozens of residents of the high-rise waited in the parking lot of the building. Some of them were in wheelchairs; others sat wrapped in blankets.

The outside of one wing of the building was blackened from smoke from the fire.

Federal law forbids paying welfare benefits to immigrants -- even legal immigrants. But a government investigation found that states all over the country are ignoring an important part of that law.
